Arctic Art Festival, here we come!
We are ready for Harstad and Arctic Arts Festival 2017! The festival exhibition Subsistence is up and running, and it's amazing. Fifteen artists from six countries present unique perspectives on understanding the Arctic, and who defines the Arctic. We pose the question if culture is part of creating an image of the circumpolar north driven by economic, geopolitical and millitary interests, and if the definition of "North" comes from the inside or outside. The exhibition opens Saturday June at Galleri NordNorge. Entrance is free and there will be daily guided tours.*
We are also a co-host and participant at Arctic Arts Summit, a cultural-political summit with participants from all the eight arctic countries. Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum hosts, in co-operation with Anchorage Museum, two sessions and several performances. The debates explore the ownership of "North", and art and design's essential role in defining future trajectories. In parallel with the sessions, indigenous artist Allison Akootchook Warden from Alaska does several performances, including the world premiere of siku/siku, focusing on two different meanings of the world siku in Iñupiaq; snow and methamphetamine.
